September 20

Well this will be my last post for Honours 10 this semester. I will miss you all. I hope you enjoy your new teacher as much as I have enjoyed teaching you, even for this short time.

Today we did a quiz on terms "bias to style" and did a drama activity to do with "The Metaphor". I am sorry all groups did not get a chance to present their work. The good thing is No Homework this weekend.

You will be able to pick up your work if you want it next week, after the marks program comes back on line. Take care.

Today we had a rather easy day. Those of us who went to the great production of "Romeo and Juliet" last Friday, raved about it for a while. Then I asked everyone to complete the story record sheet for all the stories we have read thus far: The Tell Tale Heart, The Possibility of evil, Choices, Test and Blue Boots. Fianlly, everyone was asked to read the story "The Metaphor" and be done for tomorrow. Have a nice evening.

Today we wrote a paragraph explaining what you got out of yesterday's video on writing using the notes you made. The purpose of the piece was to give me a good sample of your writing and for you to find a way to respond to the video in your own way. A rubric was handed out that covered the marking criteria and it was stapled to the writing and handed in with the notes. After that, you were asked to read the story 'Test' in Ten Top Stories. You can read this online if you go to my webpage and click on the short story link and find the link to Test. Most people completed both activities with lots of time to spare. We were going to watch a little video on subject and predicate but the Internet connection went down in my room again!!! No homework.

Bonus point for a comment.
See you tomorrow.

Please find your red books if you can.

June 11

Today I collected the chapter questions up to Ch 18. we spent the period in the library working on the Wiki Timeline project. You may get some time tomorrow to continue working on it but I would strongly advise doing some at home too. You should be finished reading the entire book. The questions to the end of the novel were also handed out today. If you did not get them, go to the website and download a copy. You need to be done at least to the end of Ch 21 by Thursday, Wed would be better. The test on Thursday will be from Ch 16-22 and the Mockingbird Final will be on Monday, the same day the timeline project is due. We will not have time to present these in class. Darn! so plan to present them in some way that I can look at them, on paper on on computer. Thanks. We will prep for the Provincial on Tuesday and then Wed. AM is the big day. Only 6 days left!!!!

Friday, June 08, 2007

June 8

Today I basically put everyone to sleep going over chapters 8-11 and highlighting the "best bits" of Mockingbird. You need to finish the chapter questions to the end of chapter 18 for Monday. Please look at the wiki/timeline project as well and it would not hurt you to finish reading the novel over the weekend. Find a sunny spot and go to it!
Have a nice weekend.

Thursday, June 07, 2007

June 7

Today we did the test on Chapters 8-16. It seems that many people are not reading very carefully, or enough. Fortunately, this test can be rewritten next week. You should be working on the wiki/timeline project and/or chapter questions. The questions to the end of chapter 18 are due on Monday. We will have some time on Monday and Tuesday to do the timeline project but after that, you are on your own, so I would advise getting started as soon as possible.

Wednesday, June 06, 2007

June 6

Well after a dark start, we managed to cover the chapter questions from 1 to about 8 or 10. Again block A is a bit behind (thanks to the power outage). We will have the last wiki presentations tomorrow. There is a test on chapters 8-16 and it is hard!! (I know I said 15 but that was the old test. The new one goes to chapter 16 but it is easier. You can decide which one to do (as a class) tomorrow. Sorry Simon and Garrett). You must have read the book and know the story quite well. There are some inferential quotes which are also quite tricky. Know the story and the names of the characters. Chapter questions 10-18 will be due on Monday. Start the wiki research/timeline project now if you wish.

Bonus: This might give you a bit of a review. You must get 24 out of 27

Today we had some more excellent Civil Rights presentations. The last few will be done tomorrow. Both blocks have more or less voted not to do the webquest in favour of the chapter questions. However, there is one more assignment coming that will be done either way. The test on Thursday will be on Chapters 8-15. Make sure you have read that far. We will be covering chapters 1-15 tomorrow! Please make sure you have your books with you.

We had a great day listening to people's research presentations on various Civil Rights events and people. Well done! We saw a short clip from Ghosts of Mississippi regarding the murder of Medger Evers. The rest will be done tomorrow. Block C handed in their chapter questions (1-7) today and Block A will have theirs in Tuesday. Keep reading. You should be just about into or through the trial by now. If you have contributed to the Glossary, make sure you let me know by email directly. I am likely to miss one from pbwiki what with all the editing going on at present. Thanks to Blake for putting the link on the Front page. He could have put it in the sidebar with the others (hint, hint) but that's ok. Test on Thursday, likely chapters 8-16. Also, if you did not get your bonus points from the weekend, please ask me for them tomorrow.

Friday, June 01, 2007

June 1

Today we worked in the library on the Civil Rights Research Project. Both blocks should have this done and posted to the wiki for Monday. If you can, find pictures, video, audio etc. to "jazz" up your page and make it pretty and interesting. If you have computer issues, ie., don't have one, do it on paper. Both blocks have the chapter questions. Block C should have theirs completed to the end of Chapter 7 for Monday. Block A should have theirs done for Tuesday. Remember, chapter questions do not need to be in full sentences, just full answers! Keep Reading!!

Well, I had fun today! We watched a movie clip on PEE chain writing, one on Shakespeare and another one on Shakespeare and then did the little quiz. Although it was out of 11, I have decided to record it out of 10, giving everyone 1 bonus, to compensate for the unpopular question. Anyway, moving on, we started to read Act 1 Scene 1 of Romeo and Juliet. If you weren't here you should read it on your own. Block C only has a little to finish. We also managed to irritate the administration and everyone else with the noise. No other homework. May 7
I was away but thank you for being so good to the TOC. The class worked on completing the analysis of the poem Invictus or Watchers and wrote out a paragraph and good copy. These should have been handed in at the end of the period or today at the latest.

May 8
Today we did an in-class poetry essay. There were many poems given out yesterday and everybody had to analyse 1 and write out their paragraph and hand it in by the end of the period. Each paragraph should have used the TPCASTT method and PEE chains. Tomorrow there is a Unit Final Exam. This can't be rewritten, so please study. Sorry this blog entry is so late.

Bonus: Try this out. Pretty Easy!

Today we had a little time to edit the Browning vs. Shakespeare PEE paragraphs. Then we talked TPCASTT. We looked at a little poem called Winter Kills and read the accompanying analysis. Should be pretty easy this time around. Any Browning/Shakespeare's need out there need to come in tomorrow. Do not worry about doing any TPCASTT tonight. We will work on that tomorrow too. Busy days ahead!

Today we had time to work on the collaborative Raven project. You need to know by the end of the period, what group you are in (no-one works alone this time), what style, voice and part of the project your are responsible for. If you lost the password/information sheet, you can download one from the poetry page on my website. Then we made notes on the sonnet. You should have used either the mind map/web method or the 2 column method. Your notes will be used during the quiz on the sonnet on Monday. The better the notes, the easier the quiz!! If you did not get totally finished, the notes are also on the webpage; read them there and finish your notes or download a copy and finish your notes. The Raven is due on May 2 for Block A and May 4 for Block C. The Raven quiz is Monday and there will be some sort of test/quiz/exam on Thursday. Have a nice weekend.

PS Did any of you look at yesterday's videos again? What did you think?

We started today by doing the inclass paragraph on the poems given yesterday. Block A did "Last Lesson of the Afternoon" and C did "Did I Miss Anything". I am looking forward to reading them. If you missed this, you will have to plan to come in for a 40 minute period at lunch or after school on Thursday. Next, we did a review for the quiz tomorrow. The same game we played is below. You can play this one and/or do the concentration from last week (or both) to study. Then we started to read "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. Tomorrow, after the quiz, we will make groups for the narrative assignment and then move onto sonnets. Study Study!!

Bonus: Send me a screenshot of your $1,000,000! (or print the page if the email doesn't cooperate)(or send it to yourself and show me tomorrow)(or load it onto your mp3 player and show me) etc.

April 24

Hi there! Sorry it's late today. I forgot about an appointment I had after school. Anyway, today we wrote the group DIDLS paragraphs for the Lady of Shallot. If yours wasn't handed in at the end of class, you need to find a way to get it finished by tomorrow. I also gave out the organizer (web) and poems for the inclass essay (paragraph) we will do tomorrow. Block A is to do Last Lesson of the Afternoon and Block C will do Did I Miss Anything? The poems are on the poetry page if you didn't get one. The organizer web is just that. If you don't have one, just make one on a sheet of paper. Remember, DIDLS is about tone!! We started the Raven in Block A but didn't get that far in C. We will carry on with it tomorrow. Quiz Thursday on Terms lists 6-8.
Email seems to be working fine at present. Try again if you need to. If it is still not working, you can leave a comment on this blog tonight and I will try to get back to you a little later.

April 23

Today was a clean up day. We heard the last of the presentations. Each person did a self evaluation on their participation and I interviewed everyone to assess their participation in the project. If you are going to "top up" your mark, please remember your deadline. We finished the Lady of Shalott competition and discussed why Tennyson may have used so much figurative language and what the tone is etc. Each group is to produce or finish a DIDLS analysis paragraph using the PEE model in class tomorrow. You will be doing a similar task yourself in the next few days, so please make sure you fully understand the process. This week's quiz on terms will be a poetry review and will cover lists 6-8, so be ready!! Go Canucks!

April 20

Today we heard almost all of the Dystopian Story presentations. Again all were very, very good. On Monday we will do an assessment of the process for that project and have a brief discussion. We also have to finish the Lady of Shalott and do another practice DIDLS paragraph. After that, you will be given a poem and have to do a DIDLS analysis on your own, in class to simulate a test situation. If you still struggle with the DIDLS after the 2nd practice or are still unsure of the PEE model, you must come in and see me. Sorry, no homework this weekend.

Bonus: Send me a screen shot. This is part 2 of the really hard one!!!

Today we reviewed the terms on list #8 in preparation for tomorrow's quiz. In Block A the girls are leading the scoring while in Block C the boys are ahead by a narrow margin. We will finish this activity tomorrow. Be looking for an inclass essay or two in the next few days. No other homework than to prepare for the dystopian story if you have not presented.

Bonus: Practice for the quiz. Beat Concentration at least 1 time and send me a screenshot.

Today, we had our first Dystopian Story Presentations. Both were great with videos and powerpoints etc. to complement. Then we read The Lady of Shalott. In groups, you had to find figures of speech in the poem. (simile, metaphor, rhyme, assonance, onomatopoeia, symbol, personification, and alliteration) Remember that term end is coming up very quickly.

Bonus: Send me a screen shot of your score. (If you are using a PC, please paste it into a word processor document and send it as an attachment unless you can make the file size small. Sometimes they won't open otherwise.) Bonus will be open until April 19.

Today we sorted out some marks issues and then heard the first DIDLS analysis of "You Learn". These were done extremely well, especially for a first attempt. Block A read Lady of Shalott and Block C will read this tomorrow. Remember Thursday is the last day for quizzes and for NHI assignments. Please bring signed interims back if you do NOT get them on email. Please check your spam filter if you are not getting your interims.

April 13

Today we went over in more detail what DIDLS stands for. We did a practice DIDLS assignment as a class on the poem "With Rue My Heart is Laden" (not the actual title, but close enough) and then with a partner worked on "You Learn". You must have an analysis for tone and a paragraph, your own or the fill in the blank one, done for Monday. Please make sure you contact your partner to finish if you did not do so in class. All the sheets for this are on the website on the poetry page. If you were away, you should be doing this on your own. Start collecting the terms for the next terms quiz on Thursday, #8. Have a nice weekend.

Bonus: Play the game and send me a screenshot of your score. The more you play, the easier the in-class tests should become.

Today we had a quiz on terms list #7 and marked it. This one can be rewritten next Thursday. That will be the last Thursday re-do day for this term. Then we discussed the poem White Flag and introduced the DIDLS method to determine tone. Block A was given the mood/music assignment and Block C discussed (sort of) their mood/music findings and then handed them in. Block A needs to finish the music/mood assignment and Block C has nothing. Both blocks should get a start on collecting the terms for list #8 (backside of the sheet) for next week.

Wednesday, April 11, 2007

April 11

Today we did record sheets. Then we collected the notes for the terms quiz tomorrow. Remember, terms quiz 7 is on terms list #7. After this, we heard the car advertisements and discussed briefly how they utilized various connotations to convey their messges to the prospective buyers. Then we read the poem Oh Fortuna and listened to the music Carmina Burana. I will try to post a clip of this on the website in a day or so. Block C got the assignment to go with this but Block A did not. Study for the quiz tomorrow.

April 10

Welcome back after your long Easter weekend. Today we watched a movie on Mood and Tone and then talked about connotation and denotation. We read two poems about cockroaches and compared the tone and began to look at things like imagery and diction and how that contributes to our understanding of the poet's tone. We looked at some "chicken" books and discussed what chicken meant in each one and finally prepared a brief description of some "new" cars. There are 3 options in the car assignment and each pair was to choose 1. Tomorrow, each group will have 30 sec to 1 min to do a TV commercial style report on their car and convince the rest of us that it appeals to the right people etc. Make sure you use the thesaurus in preparing your pitch so you get the best adjectives to convey the correct connotations and tone about your car! Terms lists 7 & 8 were also given out. Please have the terms for list 7 (side 1) done for tomorrow. There will be a quiz on terms list #7 on Thursday. You only have 2 more weeks to catch up on quizzes and NHI assignments for this term. Term ends on April 20.

Thursday, April 05, 2007

April 5

Today we watched a movie to review some of the poetry terms from the list. Then we had quiz 6 and marked it. Finally, we had time to work on the dystopian story project. This will be the last class time we have to work on this other than presentation. The presentation sign up sheets will go up on Monday. Come in before 8:00 a.m. to get the best dates! Other than that, no homework. Get those NHI's caught up and if there are any Things Fall Apart Still out there, please get those in too! Have a Happy Easter and try not to eat too much chocolate.

Bonus: Play the game and send me a screen shot of your score! This one is pretty hard!

April 2

Today we viewed some clips on various Dystopian societies. We saw a clip from Logan's Run which showed that age and classic arts and literature were devalued in that society. That was the basic criticism of our society by the film makers. We saw a clip of a piece explaining the philosophy behind the matrix. Finally we saw a clip from the film Equilibrium to show yet another vision of a dystopian society. The assignment that goes with all this is to create a synopsis for a movie based on the principles of a dystopian society. The project will be done in groups and must be completed before the end of this term. Each group must present their work orally in front of the class. Remember that the Short Story Unit Final Exam is tomorrow. You need to know the names of the stories, the principle characters, character and story types, themes, plots and other terms.

Bonus: Play the game and email me a screenshot of your score or take a digital picture. Upload that to an mp3 player and show me that tomorrow. (Low tech paper will be accepted this last time!) Thanks Daniel!!!

We also started a sentence review package. Homework is to complete 4 and study for the quiz. Please remind your parents to do the survey if they have not already. Also the server was down on Monday so if they tried before and had problems, could they please do it again. Many thanks. The crossword answers are on the website under handouts.

Bonus for today:
Who said, "Life is a promise; fulfill it."

Write out the quotation and your answer on a slip of paper and give it to me tomorrow.

Today there was a list of transitional words and phrases handed out, along with a noun sorter and a review on subject, verb, object. We started the sentence review (page 1) and had time to edit the interview paragraphs. These will be called "Brief Bio" on the marks program. The marking rubric is available on the website if you want to see it. I also took everyone's picture. The additional editing requirements were:
  1. use the patterns from the worksheet at least 1 time each
  2. get rid of boring words like nice, big, good
  3. snazzy opening
  4. connectives/transitions within the paragraph
  5. get yourself out of the paragraph
Bad News!! The quiz has been moved up to this Thursday, Feb 8 (bias to style) . Good copy of the paragraphs are due tomorrow.

Bonus for today: Go to my website. Read the quotes. Copy out your favourite and write 1 sentence telling me why you like it. Bring it in to class tomorrow.

Today we got the Act 3 study guide and tried to mark the Act 2 study guide. Many people either did not pick it up as instructed or download one from the website. No worries. Now you have to do read 2 acts tonight instead of only 1. We watched the movie version of Romeo and Juliet to the end of Act 2. We will mark the Act 2 & 3 study guides tomorrow and have the Act 2-3 test afterwards. You are allowed a cheat sheet, 1 page both sides, handwritten, no copying if you want to make one. You will need to read Act 3 to do the study guide and make your cheat sheet. Remember Test tomorrow. The provincial exam is Monday Jan 29 at 8:30.

Today we marked the Act 1 study guide and then did the Act 1 test and marked that. This can be rewritten next Thursday. Students are going to start making a "cheat sheet" for the next 2 tests. Afterwards we watched a little of the RJ movie. The Act 2 study guides were not ready by the end of the period so everyone was advised to pick one up at lunch time or download one from the website. Please read Act 2 and complete the study guide for Monday. Read the prose plot overview if you would like a good summary of the entire play.

We started off by visiting the IB French presentation on different countries around the world that speak French. Great food and music, etc. Then we finished reading Act 1 Sc iv of Romeo and Juliet. Please finish reading the Act and complete Study Guide for Act 1 by tomorrow. We will take it up in class and then have a quiz on Act 1. Please reread the scenes we read today, again, including the glossary and prose text. There are lots of different "aids" out there, including Coles notes etc. for Shakespeare so if you really need one, go looking. We will be finishing the play next week and doing (time permitting) a quick review of materials for the Provincial Exam. If you have work outstanding, please get it in ASAP.

Today we signed out Romeo and Juliet from the library. Mockingbird and Things Fall Apart should be returned as soon as possible. We read the prologue and Act 1 sc i aloud. You should reread every act/scene we do in class as well as the notes and glossary in the text every night after we do it in class. This will help you keep understanding and get the hang of the language. There will be several short quizzes coming up. Term ends on January 26 so start studying your terms etc. now. Get any NHI work in as well. After-school school is tomorrow from 6-8:30 pm.

Today we wrote the To Kill a Mockingbird Unit Final Exam. If you were absent/unexcused today, you will need a note from your parents to cover your absence before you can write the test. The rest of the period was spent either doing catch up or a Romeo and Juliet bonus assignment. Please bring your TKM books (and Things Fall Apart if you are done with them) to class tomorrow as we are going to trade them in for RJ. Anyone with 40% or so will be assigned to Wednesday Night school if they do not get a pile of work in to me tomorrow.

Welcome back after our snow day. I hope you put it to good use.

Today we did the test that was scheduled for yesterday, Chapters 16-24 of TKM. We marked part of it and I will do the written part. Then people were asked to read an article on the Scotsboro trial and make a T chart comparing the actual story to the events in TKM. You can focus on the trial but feel free to mention something about the attempt to lynch Tom too, if you like. This is due tomorrow. This is in preparation for the Provinicial Exam where you will have to do this exact type of assignment. I forgot to ask for the "Southern Womanhood" sheet from Tuesday. Please have that for tomorrow too. Tomorrow we will zip through the last chapters and the Mockingbird Final Exam will be on Monday Jan 15. Make sure to read the book if you have not already. Today was also 'redo' day, one of only 3 left, and not too many took advantage of it. Remember the term ends on Jan 26!!!!!!
See you tomorrow.

January 8

Welcome Back!! I hope you had a safe and restful holiday with a lots of fun too!
Today we read chapters 17 of To Kill a Mockingbird (TKM). We discussed various topics related to this chapter in the book. Work on the holiday homework sheets. These technically are overdue now but no marks will come off for the next few days. Get them in!! The lynching sheets and "knowing your place" sheets will be returned tomorrow, so any not in before that will only be worth partial credit. Check your marks on line and make sure they are accurate. The Things Fall Apart assignment will not lose marks for the next little while. Get it done as soon as possible. (By the end of the week would be good). Only 3 weeks of term left. Provincial Exams start January 29.
