Today we finished the movie and sprinted through the first 8 chapters of the novel. We discussed some major symbols and themes such as the fire, blindness, education, justice, tradition and family, the differenced between appearance and reality and the function of some of the characters. Miss Maudie is an adult confident for the children as is Uncle Jack. Alexandra represents the past and tradition. The Ewells are white trash, Little Chuck Little is the gallant Southern gentleman stereotype and the Cunninghams are the noble poor. Read to the end of part 1 for Monday.
