December 21

Well let's see. Today we wrote the test for chapters 8-16. This can be rewritten after Christmas if necessary. We also signed out the novel for Christmas reading "Things Fall Apart". Make sure you check the website for the work associated with this book. Work will be posted after Christmas. We had some time to work on the lynching paragraph that was started yesterday. It must come in tomorrow if it did not come in today. Also the Aunt Alexandra/social order sheet is now over due. It is on the website but the reading is not. It was also record sheet day today, so get yours done tomorrow if possible. Finally, the 2 Christmas assignments were handed out. One is the Scout and Atticus sheet and the other is the theme sheet. Do both of these before you come back in January. Remember, there will be a quiz and an exam very soon after you come back in January.

Yesterday, we read chapter 15 and some notes about the Jim Crow Laws and some stories involving lynching in the south. Your task was to make notes from articles on the graphic organizer and then turn these notes into a summary and an opinion paragraph. The graphic organizer is not on the website but the other assignment and notes are. Just make your own notes and summarize the information if you don't have an organizer.

I hope you all have a safe and merry Christmas.

December 15

Today we finished the movie and sprinted through the first 8 chapters of the novel. We discussed some major symbols and themes such as the fire, blindness, education, justice, tradition and family, the differenced between appearance and reality and the function of some of the characters. Miss Maudie is an adult confident for the children as is Uncle Jack. Alexandra represents the past and tradition. The Ewells are white trash, Little Chuck Little is the gallant Southern gentleman stereotype and the Cunninghams are the noble poor. Read to the end of part 1 for Monday. (or further) Complete your wanted poster and fact finder if you haven't already done so.

December 13

Ok, so things change! What can I say? We are running out of time. To whit, the assignments that were due later are due sooner, namely the fact file is due tomorrow, and the wanted poster will now be due Monday. Did I really say Monday? Oh well. Keep reading! Test tomorrow on Chapters 1-7. It is just names of characters etc. and information about them. If you are up to date on your reading, you will have no problems. If you are behind on your reading, get caught up!!! There are additional questions on the website and additional activities for Mockingbird. These are primarily for the 2 students away right now but anyone can do them for bonus. Look for these to be moved shortly to their own page on the website. Take care, and happy reading. Hi Cranky toad.

November 29

Well after 2 snow days, we finally made it back to school. We spent the period in the library, short periods at that, so we did not get too much done. Everyone is to choose one of the 3 poems on the back of the allstar lyrics page from some time ago. Poems to choose from are, White Flag, My Love and You Learn. Do a TPCASTT type analysis on the poem. Do this in point form only. The other thing to do is go through the online tutorial on making an outline for an essay. The address for the tutorial is:
http://office.microsoft.com/training/training.aspx?AssetID=RC061050921033
Go through this and make a short outline for your TPCASTT paragraph just for practice. We also have an exam coming up. It should be tomorrow but won't be until next week. If we don't get more snow, I'll see you tomorrow.

Saturday, November 25, 2006

November 24

We worked on interpreting Shakespeare's Sonnet 23. You had to do the vocabulary, answer the questions and rewrite the sonnet in plain English. Do not worry about rhythm or rhyme. Just get the meaning straight. Include the use of figures of speech in the first quatrain. The rewriting is not just a straight substitution of key words. You must totally rewrite the poem into modern, casual, speech. The rewriting could be done with a partner. Have this finished for Monday. Also your rewritten DIDLS poem, Last Lesson is also due on Monday. Include the original and rubric with the new copy. Have a nice weekend.

Thursday, November 23, 2006

November 23

Today we started with a quiz on poetry terms and marked it. Then we read through some notes on sonnets and answered questions. The notes and the questions were turned in before the end of the period. NO homework.

Wednesday, November 22, 2006

November 22

Today was a bit of a different day. A very short time was given to put together the narrative versions of the Raven. Each group had to then figure out a way to present them that included more than reading. All groups did well and were assessed and self assessed via a rubric. Then we played a noisy review game (that got us in trouble with the secretaries downstairs!) There is a quiz on poetry terms tomorrow. Also your revised Last Lesson Paragraphs should be done by Friday. Catch up on all sorts of other assignments like the poetry anthology, paragraph and symbol, Shalott storyboard, 18 sentences for the Raven, etc.

Tuesday, November 21, 2006

November 21

Today we searched through the Raven for various examples of poetic devices and figures of speech. We highlighted and labelled them. Then we introduced the PEE chain method for writing and explaining your points about literature. We tried some practice chains. I showed you a poem called Winter Kills and a paragraph using the PEE chains. You will need to be able to do this on your own shortly. Be prepared for the quiz on Thursday. Poetry terms (all of them)

Monday, November 20, 2006

November 20

Today we went over some of the figures of speech in The Lady of Shalott and handed these in. We read the Raven and highlighted negative connotative words. Also due tomorrow: the personal symbol and the paragraph to explain it. (good and rough copies) The poetry anthology is already overdue!!!!

Wednesday, November 15, 2006

November 15

Today we made sure definitions were filled in for the terms for list #8. The quiz on these terms is tomorrow. We discussed the poems that we went over in groups and highlighted some of the poetic devices and discussed why they might have been structured the way they were. Structure is a part of meaning in poetry. The way it looks is important and can some times give hints to the meaning. Also look at punctuation, the number of line, whether or not there is punctuation etc. to help uncover the type of poem it might be or what it is about. Make sure your symbol and paragraphs are done for Friday. Please remember to bring your password slips back signed.

Tuesday, November 14, 2006

We then wrote and marked a short quiz on the story. Next we finished our discussion of the Tell-Tale Heart vs. Blue Boots. The final part of the class was spent working on the assignments. First there is a short plot summary paragraph of the Tell-Tale Heart. The text of the story is attached to the website if you need to read it again. You must use the 8 words you picked from the vocabulary list correctly in the plot summary paragraph. Include the title, author and a brief summary of the story in the topic sentence. Then fill in details about the story. Good and rough copies for tomorrow. We completed the record sheets for early work. I read aloud some of the arguments from the story Test. Then we did double entry journals using yellow sticky notes. The strategy used was either, I'm picturing or I wonder... The story we read was called Choices. Finally, I asked for a Venn comparison of this story and Test as they both involve car accidents. The Venn is due tomorrow as well as the double entry journals. Remember about the quiz on the terms Bias to Style tomorrow.

September 19

We did an exercise on run-on sentences and review subject/predicate. These were marked. Then people edited their argument on Test para. These are due in good copy tomorrow, Sept 20. We also signed out the blue copies of Inside Stories II. The first story we will read is Choices by Susan Kerslake.
Homework is to get paragraph done.

Reminder of the Quiz Thursday on Terms Bias to Style.

Monday, September 18, 2006

September 18

We started by collecting the argument pages from Friday and discussed why you had to present 2 sides to an argument (get used to 2nd guessing your oponents) on the school uniforms sheet. Then we got into small groups and pretended that we were people from the future who did not know a lot about short stories and had to make some generalizations about the genre from reading Test. Most people handled the analysis part well and groups reported out orally to the class. It was a good review of the parts of the short story. We discussed the theme of the story about empathy and the need to accept the consquences for your actions even if they are not intentional.
Homework: Write one side of an argument. Assume that our Motor Vehicles Branch uses a test like the one in the story. There is a move afoot to get rid of it. Write your argument either supporting the use of the test or supporting the decision to ban it altogether. Rough copy only is due tomorrow. We will do some in-class editing of this.

Students were instructed to spend the rest of the class either reading the story or doing the worksheet.
Homework: read the story and have worksheet done.

For Monday: We will write an argument for or against maintaining the "test" in the story "Test".

September 14

Did a reading test and worked on Venn diagrams. Did an easy punctuation review on Quotation marks. Had time to work on "rants". (persuasive para). Rants are due Sept 15.
Quiz on terms Bias to Style on Sept 21. Get a terms list.

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

September 13

Today we read through 2 articles on cheating in school and compared them for their use of persuasive techniques and the techniques of argument. Then a Venn diagram was done outlining the differences and similarities. Most people got most of it done in class so no official homework.
Those people who did not turn in their persuasive paragraph need to turn it in tomorrow. If you have lost your sheet, go to Miss Kemp's web page for instructions on how to download a new one.

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Sept 11-12

Sept. 11

We went to the library and watched a powerpoint presentation on websearching. Afterwards, students had the choice of doing a practice session or a quiz if they knew all the techniques already. Only students with active passwords can use the school computers at this time. Those who did not bring their forms in will have to do the intenet work at home. The websites for the internet practice are: webquest.sdsu.edu/searching/fournets.htm (Four nets of better internet searching) and http://websearch.about.com/library/quizzes/search_engine_quiz/blsearchenginequiz.htm for the quiz

Those not working on the computer, read some persuasive articles and were asked to highlight the technques they found in them. Next they worked with a partner to choose 1 paragraph, and write about whether it was persuasive or not and to explain why using the persuasive techniques we learned on Friday. Some people got started on this but those on the computer did not have much chance. We will continue this tomorrow.

Sept 12

We worked in class to finish these persuasive paragraphs. We then read some out loud. Then we read a persuasive article written by Charles Dickens and analysed some of the features that made it persuasive and descriptive. Next we read an article about Child Labour and again assessed what made this persuasive and how the voice/tone of the author came through from his use of adjectives, phrases etc. Finally, an assignment to write a persuasive paragraph was given. This is due tomorrow, Sept 13.
